La Cala De Mijas Could Be A Good Retirement Choice

Mijas is a town in Andalusia and, unusually, is surrounded by the sea, mountains, and forest. Unusual, because it is not often that all three are seen together. As you might expect, in the heart of the Costa del Sol, it is filled with whitewashed buildings, and it is divided into four sections, the Pueblo – which is the town – Las Lagunas, which is a suburban commercial area; Costa, which is the main commercial area and also the residential area; and La Cala de Mijas, which is a small village and seaside resort. The weather overall in Mijas is fairly mild, but as you go up the mountains – rather predictably – it gets colder.

La Cala used to be just a small fishing village, but today it has grown to a population of around 10,000 which means that most of the locals still recognise each other in the street, but in the summer – July and August – it can get quite busy with tourists. La Cala has lots of chiringuitos (bars), cafes, and family-owned shops. There is a street market called El Baratillo which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and sells gifts, fruit and veg, and a lot of other items. In July, the village has a week-long festival of music and dance where you can sample local delicacies.

Estepona Is A Traditional Spanish Town With It’s Own Identity

Very many people in the UK go to Spain or Portugal for their holidays and it is not surprising, especially if you live in the North where the weather can be very depressing in the winter. Southern Spain and Portugal both have that wonderful Mediterranean climate with day after day of sunshine, in some places 330 days a year, so if you like to laze by the pool that is the place to do it.

Furthermore, there are loads of things to see and do in Spain and Portugal, and the food is great too. They eat five times a day in many places – breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner – and the food is great with plenty of seafood.

So it’s no surprise that some people buy a holiday home there so that they can go as often as they wish, and others decide to retire there. There are lots of villas and apartments for sale in Southern Spain, and some of them in unspoiled towns such as the apartments for sale in Estepona.

This is a super town near Marbella and, unlike that and Torremolinos and Fuengirola, it has managed to retain its’ traditional identity. This is very obvious in the Old Town where the little cobbled lanes have houses with whitewashed walls with flower-pots strewn all over them containing flowers of greens, blues, yellows, and reds. The central square itself is named Plaza de los Flores which translates as “Square of Flowers”.

Estepona also boasts some of the best beaches and best seafood restaurants in Malaga as well. The main beach is Playa Rada which, even in July and August is less crowded than the other Costas, and it backs on to some splendid seafood restaurants and chiringuitos, or bars, as well. It is only a ten-minute walk from the heart of the Old Town. There is also a nudist beach, if that takes your fancy, only a ten-minute drive away.

So if you are thinking about a retirement home in Southern Spain, you might well wish to consider Estepona as, although it does cater for tourists, it doesn’t get as busy as many other towns.

THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS FOR INVESTING IN SPANISH PROPERTY

Spain is probably the most popular overseas tourist destination for UK residents. It is not too far away – only a couple of hours flight – yet it has unbelievable hours of sunshine every year in the South on the Mediterranean coast. Would you believe more than 320 days a year? Who would swap that for life on the North Yorkshire moors in February? No wonder it is so popular.

Many British tourists decide to go and live in the sun there after 40 years of working for a living. There are golf courses that are a major attraction in the area, and the people are friendly and welcoming. The food is superb, and the restaurants are cheap, certainly when compared with the UK. The overall cost of living is quite a lot less too. What’s not to like?
