Orihuela City is the capital of the region of Southern Spain of the same name and lies about 20 miles inland from the coast. The overall area stretches down to the coast and covers a number of small towns and villages. There is a considerable amount of farmland with orchards and palm groves and about 16 km of beaches with some of the best blue flag awards in Europe. The main beaches are Dehesa de Campoamor and La Zenia, and the area has two marinas and three golf courses, which, of course, will appeal to many retirees.
The marinas are at Dehesa de Campoamor and Cabo Roig where there are also plenty of water sports. Horse riding and tennis are also popular, and the area has a lot of walking trails as well.
Orihuela has a temperate climate, and the World Health Organisation in 1986 recommended it as one of the most equitable in the world, easily averaging over 20°C on most days and with an average 325 days of sunshine a year. In fact, it is not too hot in the summer, nor yet too cold in the winter. Most of us wouldn’t be unhappy with that.
