La Manga Del Mar Menor

La Manga del Mar Menor means “The Sandbar of the Minor Sea” and is a narrow strip of land 14 miles long by about 350 yards wide dividing the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean in the Murcia region of Spain. Until the 1960’s it was virtually untouched and then it was “discovered” as a tourist resort and became urbanised and had tourist infrastructure included. La Manga is cut off by some natural channels which keep the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean connected to each other.

Until about 1960, La Manga was virtually uninhabited: all that was there were a couple of windmills and some archaeological remains both on the land and offshore, which showed that there had been human activity there for several thousand years. Then in the 1960’s the first hotels and high-rise blocks were built, and people started to visit from all over Spain.
